I need to use a squid proxy server, without changing my lan settings in IE?

I am trying to setup a squid proxy server on my linux server to allow someone to enter the proxy server address in the IE address bar and an address you want to access and have the proxy server redirect it back to the requester. I am trying to get a friend around a work firewall block.

My experience tell me that doing that is a little complicated.Some times the protection goes bananas and the whole system freak out.So,go to Best Buy or Radio shack and ask for help.
