Can I move a program file and have the program still work afterwards?

My default C drive only have 20G, which are practically full, so I want to move some of the files to my D drive which has nearly 40 free Gigs. If i did this, would my programs have trouble functioning or would I just need to redirect the program to the new location of the file somehow?

Registry entries would be all screwed up and they would not work.

Just move the non-essentials (pictures, movies, music, etc.) to the 40 gig and start storing things there, leave the 20 gig for program installation directories and such.

Most apps use the registry, so the program will have problems finding the "pieces".

Some apps aren't registry based, and have fewer problems.

I've got an old program called "RegSearch" that allows me to do a "bulk" change, such as from:

C:\Program Files\MyNetworkApp

to

D:\NetApps\MyNetworkApp

But that is still pretty "iffy"
